The surgeon general issued an advisory on parents’ mental health. Parenting is now in the same category as cigarettes regarding public health risks. The cause? “the expectation that they spend ever more time and money educating and enriching their children. These pressures, researchers say, are driven in part by fears about the modern-day economy — that if parents don’t equip their children with every possible advantage, their children could fail to achieve a secure, middle-class life.” @coachcoale and I happened to be talking about this just today on a zoom As a parent of teenagers I’m playing a different game than most of my peers. While they hire tutors and focus all their energy on getting into the best college, I’m focused on building independence, resilience, and a love of learning. It’s less stressful this way. I believe that the pressure on parents to constantly educate and enrich their children is causing a significant strain on their mental health. We need to prioritize building independence and resilience in our children instead of focusing solely on academic success
