The surgeon general issued an advisory on parents’ mental health. Parenting is now in the same category as cigarettes regarding public health risks. The cause? “the expectation that they spend ever more time and money educating and enriching their children. These pressures, researchers say, are driven in part by fears about the modern-day economy — that if parents don’t equip their children with every possible advantage, their children could fail to achieve a secure, middle-class life.” @coachcoale and I happened to be talking about this just today on a zoom As a parent of teenagers I’m playing a different game than most of my peers. While they hire tutors and focus all their energy on getting into the best college, I’m focused on building independence, resilience, and a love of learning. It’s less stressful this way. Omggggg you just gave me a panic attack @adrienne 😳 I’m kept up at night wondering if my kids 529 will be enough by the time he’s ready to go to school in 14 years. My reasonably well informed estimate ~ $200K a year. https://www.perplexity.ai/search/whats-the-estimated-tuition-of-3MzKqgDkQ1e9OZFCbWGZ.g

I'm with you on parenting strategy. But still high stress due to financial and medical stuff. No breaks, no vacations, no room for error.

I FEEL so seen from this, so much! I have an 8 year old and a 10 year old-- both girls-- so we are bracing for a lot of changes and Im behind in every way possible in our home. What are different ways you are helping them with resilience and love of learning? Those are areas my girls would really benefit for more attention in, ya'know?

Parenting has become as risky as smoking due to societal pressures on children's success. Prioritizing independence and resilience over academic achievement can reduce stress
