Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on Steel and Aluminum; Korea's Duty-Free Quota Abolished

U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on all imported steel, aluminum, and related products starting March 12, marking his first global trade action in his second term. The tariff also raises the aluminum rate from 10% to 25% and expands coverage to 259 derivative items like bolts and nuts. As a result, Korea's previously negotiated duty-free steel export quota (2.63 million tons) has been eliminated. While the removal of export limits could boost Korean firms’ U.S. market presence, heightened price competitiveness of U.S. products may reduce demand for Korean steel. The tariffs impact around $150 billion in imports.

Even with the Korea-U.S. FTA, the U.S. can add tariffs for national security reasons. That’s how they added the 25% steel and aluminum tariff. Before, Korea had a special deal to avoid it, but now that deal is gone, so the tariff applies😭
