The JV high school basketball team I coach won by 1 point tonight on a bank half court shot at the buzzer. Truly ESPN Top 10 / movie worthy stuff. It was awesome. But there were still 4 seconds left when he shot it. So I told him after the post-game celebrations nice shot, but next time take it all the way to the rack.

I love it too, super challenging! If it was easy it would be boring, right?

what's funny is when I said discipline I meant the discipline to give max effort all four quarters. I've got a great group of sweet kids, super young for a proper varsity squad (half the team are sophomores), but all the fundamentals we work on in practice (boxing out, ball movement, cutting, etc) seem to go out the window when it's game time. They either go deer in the headlights or fall asleep on the basics.

We run 2-3 zone too, which works well for the most part. Got some streaky shooters who can be lights out or ice cold depending on the night. We fall apart when pressed, give up turnovers leading to easy layups. There's stretches when they figure it all out & the game is beautiful, but those moments are fleeting. The mindset part is the hardest for me, no matter how much we talk about and work on what needs improving, it doesn't translate when it matters...

This is my second season coaching this team (mostly new players this year) and I love it. I don’t really focus on discipline as much as getting max effort and positive attitudes with everyone supporting their teammates. I like a winning effort in a loss better than a poor effort for a win, not that I would know much about the latter, we are not good enough to get many wins with poor efforts haha.

We play tough defense with a full court press and 2-3 zone and push the ball on offense to try to score as much as possible in the fast break. I don’t teach offensive set. We don’t even have an inbounds play. I’d rather focus and get great at a very few things than try to do too much. It’s worked fairly well in 2 seasons.
