I feel like things would be a lot better if we knew who owned each wallet (each person could still have multiple)

the L2 strategy failed ENS L2s becoming a core part of ethereum scaling meant that ENS went from having a chance to be a canonical domain that can hold that data to just being a simple decorator with many competitors on every L2. it lost its significance. not saying the L2 strategy is wrong. just saying that it has a negative effect on ENS.

The L2 strategy is downstream of the missed opportunity by ENS on mainnet. ENS failed to become anything more than a domain service when they had a clear opportunity to be more than that by tying additional info to wallet addresses
