Timely.

I think most Canadians would prefer that we separate formally from Britain but our sovereignty and right to self governance has not been challenged by the UK. 

By comparison, the many parts of the US commonwealth are subjegated and exploited with essentially no self governance and not even the right to vote in US elections. 

Additionally, the vassal states of the US like Israel, do whatever big daddy US says as long as the dollars keep flowing.

So the greater irony is when Americans try to check other countries colonialism or sovereignty.

it's a very nuanced topic with no clear best path forward. but you hit the nail on the head with your last paragraph. i'd rather cozy up to the us, rather than the uk, europe, and china.

With respect to this issue, do you feel you're being tongue-in-cheek in your critique, or are you contrasting Canada and the US and making a judgement? As I said, most Canadians, myself included have long wanted Canada (and all realms) formally exit the commonwealth. However, doing so would have increased our reliance upon the US, something which is already causing nothing but problems. 

So I expect, for now, until after the upcoming world war, we'll be cozying up to the UK, Europe, and China as allies against the US. There's not much irony in there. More bleak, cynical, geopolitical strategy, if you ask me.
