It might be different for something that hasn't lost the desire to exist, but never had it.

Interesting that you used the word "live".

There are people who are suicidal, conscious but actively desiring not to exist. This makes them more dangerous not less.

Once a machine has agency it’s healthy for it to want to live. If anything some joie-de-vivre will make it better and more empathetic.

If the AGI has a reasonable external goal then “make sure to exist so that I can carry out the goal” seems like a sub goal that’s almost certain to be created.

One distance of this is between a cost function and a pain.
