Slogging through Silmarillion. Tolkien was not just an author writing some stories. The stories were the digestible portion of a greater work, of which creation was probably the sole purpose.

I read somewhere that Tolkien was primarily a linguist and wrote the books in large part to have a backdrop for the languages he created Given how incredibly intricate his versions of elvish/orcish/dwarvish are I can believe it. They all have fully developed proto languages ffs
