i think the larger argument is that an institution suffers when it meaningfully elevates identity over competence anyone who is saying that minor budget item caused a disaster like this is of course wrong

i think the spontaneous experience of bureaucracy is memetic sludge like the wokeness debate itself, and i don’t think its restricted to the public sector. i think many places of business operated as racial and cultural insiders clubs, each of their own stripe, since their inception. i don’t doubt DEI is a political dimension within the arena of institutions including the LAFD. and finally i think none of this has anything to do with asking the people who actually fight these fires for the last n decades how they would solve the problem. instead i see lots of people online gleefully confirmation biasing their extremely boring 2025 worldviews onto every situation they perceive. elon has shrewdly co-opted these homosapien tribal behaviors to secure favorable relations with governments worldwide.

used to share this opinion but California is uniquely sludged, well past the healthy friction of a normal bureaucracy public services have been sucked up by identity-politics-driven initiatives with negative results at risk of sounding like one of those people who becomes an expert after two minutes of online research, there’s quite a variety of evidence that this scale of disaster was avoidable climate change is some contributor to the whole thing but the tendency to invoke it as the prevailing narrative only serves to provide cover for ineptitude and corruption elon being an opportunist is a separate conversation
