“Taking things for granted” is a very funny concept. It mostly means “being ungrateful” in 2024. But there’s real benefits from when you “take things for granted” Being able to build up a “saved” conceptual model of the world so you don’t have to re-reason everything from first principles every day is great. It also makes us think where we are is the bare minimum, which makes us ungrateful. But that also drives progress because we’re not satisfied with things the way they are.
