Imagine what it would be like if the great Hippodrome of Constantinople had remained standing like the Colosseum. The hippodrome was home to major events such as when Justinian I ordered generals Belisarius and Mundus to surround the hippodrome and advanced, killing 30,000 opponents. (Year 532 AD)

Today in History Panama City Founded (1519) On August 15, 1519, Panama City was founded by Spanish conquistador Pedro Arias Dávila. It became the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas and served as a key transit point for the Spanish Empire, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Panama City quickly grew in importance as a hub for the transport of gold and silver from the Americas to Spain. However, in 1671, the city was destroyed by the pirate Henry Morgan and subsequently rebuilt. Today, Panama City is the capital of Panama and one of the most significant financial and cultural centers in Central America.
