Nice weather, not too cold and not hot at all. Not as packed with tourists as spring (Sakura) or summer.

Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka would be the classic for first timers. I prefer Osaka over Kyoto because of how packed with tourists Kyoto gets. The food in Osaka is amazing.
