How anyone can vote for people who stir up hate with insane conspiracy theories is beyond me. Well, I do know how. Low information voters who just vote along party lines, a First Past the Post voting system that encourages only extreme candidates to choose from and gerrymandering of districts to ensure that the party wins no matter how extreme their candidate. Our system needs to change so we can vote for people that are not simply in it to control others instead of being public servants doing what we determine is best for us.

Its citizens united as well, can’t run a campaign without tons of money. It had the intended result giving the rich an even stronger advantage

True with a twist. The rich's campaign donations benefit them in buying the votes of the candidates after election because campaigns are so expensive that they can't run without the rich. But the rich don't pick the candidates, the party does. Lots of voters don't even pay attention to the campaign or ads. They just go vote for the party that they are affiliated with. They don't look at the candidates' actions, listen to their words or pay attention to the news about them. Ultimately it's about a flawed voting system that gives all the power to two parties and both of those parties are more concerned with staying in power than executing the will of the people (though one is definitely more authoritarian than the other!). It's a real mess. Fixing the voting system by getting rid of FPTP voting in favor of Stacked Ranked voting, removing gerrymandering and getting rid of the Electoral College at the federal level is what needs to be done to get us out of this terrible cycle that we are forever stuck in.
