Provisional update for Farcaster friends: My sources tell me that Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was likely killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Hrat Heik neighborhood in Beirut. There has been no official communication from the group and its own channels are posting through it which is highly suggestive. Other sources have said that Nasrallahโ€™s successor Hashim Shafialdeen was not present during the bombing.

I would think that if he is alive they would issue a statement, but their silence suggests to me he is likely dead. His daughter was also reported killed and the likelihood is that they were nearby.

in the event that this is the case, what are the implications for your opinion? I don't know the politics of those countries, but as far as I understand Hezbollah is a terrorist group, right?

Probably there will be a war in southern Lebanon and Israeli occupation of the territory there. Hezbollah is a very polarizing group in that its armed wing is listed as a terrorist group in the U.S. but its civilian wing is part of the Lebanese government. Among Lebanese it is very popular among the Shia community who see it as a guarantor of their interests and is allied with some Christian groups, but it is disliked by many Sunnis due to its role in the Syrian Civil War.

So, if I understand correctly, for Lebanon the occupation of their territories by Israel is like for Ukraine the occupation of our territories by Russia? This is all terrible, we live in a world where force decides everything, not the UN, who have shown themselves helpless, expressing only concern.
