Last summer I reported one of the biggest stories in my life. The Intercept was contacted by a classified source within the Pakistani military establishment who leaked a top-secret document showing details of conversations between U.S. diplomats and their Pakistani counterparts over then-PM Imran Khan. The documents showed State Department threatening that Khan be removed. Within a month of the conversation recorded in the document, he had been taken out in a no-confidence vote organized by the military brass. Now, he’s in prison. After being cleared of charges of mishandling that secret document himself, Khan today was cleared of charges related to his marriage that were being used to keep him behind bars. Only time will tell if he will actually be freed. I’ve reported on secret documents from the NSA, FBI, Iran, India and elsewhere but perhaps none shed as much light on how things work behind the scenes than this one. https://theintercept.com/2023/08/09/imran-khan-pakistan-cypher-ukraine-russia/
