Going through old photos I found this picture of myself in Iraq in 2017 during the war against ISIS. At the time I was embedded with a Kurdish Peshmerga unit fighting from a place called Black Tiger military base in Northern Iraq. During the course of the war the Peshmerga had the ability to call in NATO airstrikes on ISIS positions and made ample use of that during that time. There were very educated and professional officers and many ordinary soldiers were friendly and particular curious about my background and also why I’d even wanted to come to Iraq during this time. Sadly several years later there was an insurgent attack against this base and a number of people were killed by a vehicle directed bomb. The second picture below is a vehicle that was captured and disabled by the Peshmerga in an unsuccessful attack while I was there. The bomb casing is visible through the broken window.

It’s mostly boring sitting around in the heat drinking hot tea and then periodically something terrible or exhilarating would happen

I imagine that at first you’d be constantly on edge and anxious always been curious: how long until that feeling goes away and your calm in enemy territory/under threat of fire fight?
