After the premiere, critics tore the film to shreds, calling The Bodyguard the most talentless project in the history of cinema. Both Houston and Costner were nominated for the Golden Raspberry, which the singer eventually received as Worst Actress. But, as often happens, viewers ignored the critics' opinions, and the film became a number one hit and recouped its costs three times over at the box office. With a modest budget of $25 million, the film grossed more than $120 million in the US and more than $400 million worldwide. The success of the film surprised even screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, who admitted: βThere is some mysticism in this. I understand that Kevin is very popular, the music sets the mood, but all this is in many films. And this is not the main thing that led to such amazing success.
