Design Icons: 33 Konstantin Grcic 

After a short break I’m back with a new designer. The designer I’d like to introduce to you today is very well known for his futuristic furniture creations, inspired by a mix of Italian emotions and German rationalism.

Sapiens qui prospicit - Wannabe Polymath. Interested in art, music, history, philosophy and religion.

His early exposure to art and his passion for building things led him to study cabinet making at the John Makepeace School for Craftsmen in Wood in Dorset, UK, before pursuing graduate studies in Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art in London.

In 1991, Grcic founded his own studio, Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID), in Munich. His design philosophy is marked by a commitment to logic, utility, and simplicity, often employing geometric shapes and unexpected angles.

Grcic's work is characterized by a spartan and functional approach, where he frequently utilizes high-tech materials and cutting-edge technology like 3D modeling software to create his mass-produced items.

Among his notable works are the Chair ONE and the MIURA stool, which despite their unconventional shapes, are praised for their comfort. The Mayday lamp, another significant creation, showcases Grcic's ability to blend practicality with innovative design.

These pieces not only reflect Grcic's unique design language but also his philosophical approach to design, particularly seating, which he considers a reflection of societal changes and lifestyles.

Grcic's impact on the design field is substantial. His works have been featured in design shows and museums, and he has been recognized for his contributions with numerous awards.

His influence extends beyond his creations; he is known for his mentorship and collaboration with young designers, shaping the next generation of industrial design talent.

Konstantin Grcic is a renowned German industrial designer born in 1965 in Munich, Germany. With a Serbian father and a German mother, Grcic grew up in a milieu steeped in art (His mother was a Gallery owner), which profoundly influenced his creative trajectory.
