On the design of cameras: (1/2) This post made me think about the design of photo cameras. It's true that Leica cameras in particular have a retro feel. But why do cameras look the way they do? On the one hand, it is true that the design of the (Leica) camera dates back to the days of analog photography and many settings were made manually back then. But you also have to bear in mind that for many, especially professional photographers, the camera is purely a tool and not a design object, the motto here is that form follows function. Settings such as exposure time or aperture must be able to be adjusted within fractions of a second. Physical dials are unbeatable for this.

(2/2) The camera must work perfectly in the most adverse conditions, whether in the rainforest, on a safari in Africa, on the front line in war or at a riot in the rain. It must fit well in the hand, be unobtrusive and not break immediately if handled roughly. That is why the basic shape of the Leica has changed so little, you could almost say it is perhaps the perfect shape. You could also include the Canon design here, which is perhaps not quite so retro.
