No problem. Phone numbers are pretty insecure, both for 2 factor authentication (over sms) and account recovery, because they are susceptible to SIM Swapping attacks. 

You'll get a ton of info from googling it, but tldr; it's surprisingly easy for someone to just call your phone provider and convince (or bribe) them to give your phone number to them.

willing to explain to a non-security person why you don't add you phone?

Should I not be?
