This is the worst consumerist propaganda of our generation, implying that if we're not spending money then we should reconsider.

Here's a fun fact: If we're paying, we're even more the product. We're a *qualified lead* now, the business knows they can extract money from us and they're just getting started.

A profit-driven company is not going to leave money on the table because "lol well they're already paying I guess, so we're not going to extract more from them." Come on.

There's many of us who make "free" products, like open source software or even subsidized SaaS offerings. This deserves some amount of gratitude instead of self-defeating suspicion. 

I'm all for discussing threat models like data being used for AI training or being sold or whatever, but please stop repeating this shameful trope.

I was confused about why, despite the fact that I pay for YouTube premium and would never click an ad, they are clearly still farming my attention. Shouldn’t our incentives be aligned? 

Nope, they can always still extract more training data from me, and use that to get money from someone else.
