'attention residue' is such an effectively gross term it makes me not want to multitask

Trying to think of an example of your scenario. Would it be say, when you go to look for a file on your computer and while looking you realize the project folder needs better organized so you spend an hour organizing and also looking for the file? 

That feels more natural of a task switch to me, less jarring to the brain and more of a progression of actions.

While something like reading a book and answering text messages every time they randomly ping through on your phone is a full on abrupt switch.

You’re so right. My main struggle is when a task prompts some other bigger task, a part of which is needed for the current one. It’s such a struggle to know how much to move the attention to try kill a few birds at once doing both. I feel this then.
