Good post by Russ Cox here, https://research.swtch.com/telemetry-intro From my own experience working on OSS at Google, telemetry is super beneficial to the end-user. Without it, devs are blind as to where to put in their effort. Can it be abused? Probably

yes, especially in domains where stated preferences dont match revealed preferences (e.g. consumer products)
