let’s for a moment think about the incentives structure for a superapp facebook is kind of a superapp already ina way: it has social, events, shops, marketplaces, etc. if such an app is in cahoots with the gov then it’s a mutually supportive relationship focused on control

by “Asia” you mean “China”, right? if so, let’s not forget what kind of gov runs the country there, and that data and daily interactions on these platforms are subject to scrutiny and social scoring it’s easier to control the whole population from two superapps than from a hundred smaller apps

forgot to mention that if you’re after a programmatic way to access data, it’s almost always going to be via some kind of endpoint like REST or GraphQL the difference comes in what you do next with the data you now have access to

like many others mentioned this is highly contextual, but you can apply some general heuristics if you’re after just ephemeral read on-the-fly, then probably REST/GraphQL with some light caching if you’re building sth where you’re using onchain data to connect to your own data, caching in SQL+Redis works

ultimately, the product still needs to be of a certain quality (or appear as "good enough," in case of microsoft) to capture a significant portion of the market, yet you can do a lot more having huge marketing budget or having eyeballs on your products (google search banner ads for chrome)

the counterpoint to that might that when you have enough financial backing like google and microsoft, you can take over the market share sooner and quicker than your competitors, who now start an uphill battle, carving out their little space (take a look at what BCNY is doing with Arc browser)
