Few realize the iPod succeeded because Apple optimized a widely explored idea space with a vertically integrated compute stack and, despite the iPod being far from perfect, it addressed mp3 player pain *system* pain points. And the Zune failed because it was randomly different.

I say this as someone who thought their initial price point was insane versus the (can't remember the name) mp3 player I had that was easily managed via mp4 tags, folders and had better playback quality and codec support at 1/5 the cost. Turns out music is something people want to enjoy without much effort.
