Few realize the iPod succeeded because Apple optimized a widely explored idea space with a vertically integrated compute stack and, despite the iPod being far from perfect, it addressed mp3 player pain *system* pain points.

And the Zune failed because it was randomly different.

I still have my original iPod and it works! I can no longer upload new content onto it, but what was on it is still playing.
