eliza has been open source from the get and has a huge community of contributors - forks are benefiting from ongoing core development & good forks are being pulled into the main repo - incredible positive feedback loop

virtuals is close source, you can only interact via an api (for now) and can do very little to advance the base tech

I'm using eliza for in game npcs right now 

I made similar npcs a year ago but it took much longer and they were way less effective & the lift was much bigger making everything from scratch
