1/1 Freebies are notoriously corrupting. “Give a man a fish and he'll ask for more. Give him a fishing rod and he will give you back the fish,” says a Roman proverb. Romans were optimists - too often we see how a man is given a fishing rod, and he either breaks it or sells it, and comes back to ask for fish - no, to demand fish, because you probably have an extra one, and he has none! That's the way people are, but it's not just the way people are. The matter is also in the structure of society, in the so-called “agent value”: for every person who gives fish and every person who takes it, there are enough people willing to transfer the fish and cut off a fat piece of it to themselves “for services”.

Unfortunately, in most cases good deeds require intermediaries. Yes, they will take a piece for themselves, but otherwise the deed will not be done at all
