The 17th day of the year according to the Gregorian calendar. There are 348 days until the end of the year.
1. The Vatican became the seat of the Pope of Rome
In the Middle Ages the Roman Catholic Church was strongly influenced by the French kings, this period in history is called “the Avignon captivity of the popes”. The situation changed dramatically when on January 17, 1377 Pope Gregory XI on his ship on the Tiber entered Rome, and proceeded to the Lateran Palace of Avignon, which became the center of the Catholic Church.
2. In 1917, the U.S. bought the Virgin Islands from Denmark for 25 million dollars. On January 17, 1917, an agreement was made that transferred the islands of the Danish West Indies to the US. In Denmark, a referendum was held in which 64.2% of citizens voted in favor of selling the islands. At the same time, on the islands themselves, just under 100% of the residents were in favor of the transfer to the United States. 1 reply
