The attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, is a prime example of how a nation can underestimate or remain unaware of the seriousness of a threat until it manifests. Before the attack, while tensions existed between the U.S. and Japan, most Americans did not perceive Japan as a direct or immediate threat. The surprise assault shocked the nation, leading to a rapid shift in public opinion and the U.S. entering World War II. Similarly, acknowledging and addressing current threats, such as China's growing geopolitical and economic influence, is crucial. While it might be challenging to fully grasp or accept the seriousness of China's strategic ambitions, dismissing them could lead to unexpected consequences. Strategic preparedness and vigilance are key in mitigating potential risks.
