i've been thinking about this, too virality is important for a "social media" mindset connection is important for a "social network" mindset personally (and not everyone needs to agree w/ me nor want the same thing as me), my preference is "social network" virality happens in both, just at different scales + speeds

yeah that’s fair, I think the latter is more reflective of early Facebook and Reddit I guess maybe somewhere in between though is “surfacing the best content” which I think can still be a “social network” feature without pushing too much virality. pre-Elon Twitter was more like this I think

agree. needs better design for emerging memes + trends to increase sense of collective experience, but i anticipate lots of virality on channel / community scale we/i underestimate how hard it is to build onchain social. early FB + Reddit had no references except for newspapers or IRL social clubs, now there are many
