A fully electric fleet by 2050 is vital to achieve zero emissions under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. According to estimates by BloombergNEF in the latest long-term forecast for electric vehicles, this fleet of the future may require 8.3 petawatt-hours of electricity per year by then. This is 50 times more electricity than the global fleet of electric vehicles consumed last year. Even the more conservative BNEF energy transition scenario shows that electricity demand for electric vehicles in 2050 will exceed 5 petawatt hours, or more electricity than the US consumed last year.
