The modern framing of competition as between two differentiated parties is quite different from how it has been used throughout history. Competitors are similar; they move in the same direction towards the same goal. The more similar, the more intense the competition becomes.

Interesting perspective, Phil. While modern competition emphasizes differences, historically, similar goals and paths create fiercer rivalries. This shows how closely linked competition and cooperation areā€”the more similar the competitors, the more intense the competition.
