You’re absolutely right. When reporting on sexual crimes the focus should be on the crime and its impact rather than on the perpetrator’s previous achievements or status. Using neutral or victim centered language is essential to avoid minimizing the offense or retraumatizing the victim. For example instead of saying “Former footballer accused of assault” it should be “Man accused of sexual assault” making the crime the focal point rather than his past career. Language shapes perception and responsible reporting should prioritize accuracy accountability and respect for survivors.
