Many of my friends like that. My father used to fish a lot. 
He had a fishing rod and all the gear, but he gave it up. Now he prefers to just go and watch people fish.

We have a small fishing village nearby, and when we go to the beach with my dad, he heads over to the fishing boats and spends hours watching the fishermen prepare the boats, the nets, and everything for when they go out to sea at night.

I 💜 fishing. I can understand that he likes to watch others fish now instead of doing it himself.
