There is no place we'd rather take a meeting than on a farm! Recently MFT's Development Officer Anna Fiedler visited Ripley Farm in Dover-Foxcroft as part of a meeting with the Food Funders Network. Thank you to Gene & Mary Margaret Ripley for hosting us (who've participated in several of our Farm Business Planning programs) and to the Maine Philanthropy Center for sponsoring the day's event.

🥛We’re kicking off Maine Dairy Month by raising a glass of ice cold milk to all the Maine dairy farmers who make this important agricultural sector what it is, a cornerstone of farming across the state. With over 200 farms that tend herds of dairy cows, goats, sheep, and even water buffalo, the dairy sector contributes to many jobs and economic growth, and makes up a large percentage of conserved farmland in Maine.

Farm Bill negotiations are moving forward! “If the text from the Relief for Farmers Hit with PFAS Act doesn’t make it into the Farm Bill, we’ll be in a position of continuing to have a patchwork response across the country where different states are going to respond in different ways and there’s inconsistency in that response,” said MFT’s Policy & Research Director Shelley Megquier in response to the recent Farm Bill draft that is currently being reviewed by lawmakers.

At the end of March MFT closed on an easement with the addition of an OPAV on Milliken Field in Albion, 30 minutes north of Belfast, in the heart of Maine’s dairy country. This was the second farm property we’ve protected with owner Robert Milliken, who’s original home farm is just down the road. The 39 acre property includes 13 acres of open land with excellent agricultural soils capable of supporting a wide range of agricultural uses. Currently Rob utilizes the fields for a commercial hay operation. We are excited to welcome this addition to the Forever Farm Network!

Maine farms are facing worsening floods, winds, droughts, and other climate change impacts. As farming communities combat this by working to build climate resiliency through the adoption of conservation practices (in case you missed it, check out our previous post announcing MFT's expanded Climate Resilience Program!), the federal support of a robust farm safety net is needed.

Exciting update! We’ve seen a lot of enthusiasm from Maine farmers interested in adopting climate resilient strategies – but planning and implementation take time and resources, and every farm has unique climate risks and goals. Thanks to a $1 million, 3-year grant from TD Bank through the 2022 TD Ready Challenge, we’ve been able to accelerate the development of a more robust Climate Resilience Program. We're launching a suite of new and expanded programs to help farms plan and implement resilience strategies.
