We did some profiling on the fastest frame servers. Neynar is at the top of the list, and almost 2x as fast as the next speediest frame server. They respond to post requests in ~18ms! great work @rish and @manan

That is kinda nuts, the serverless solution I was using wasn't getting better .5 seconds. Really shows the dedication to building a performant stack!

does this make you reconsider the serverless approach? (asking for a friend)

Nope, its still plenty viable, its more so a testament to the work Neymar is putting in. The problem is the constraints of the frames. From what I remember Neynar frames are mostly static, @manan correct if I am wrong, so it can be pre-rendered and fanned out to CDNs. Img gen on serverless is cpu bound so takes time

correct, mostly static frames. But you can't fan out content on POST to CDNs, CDNs are for GETs afaik. We don't pre-render. Every request converts a JSON page to html. Serverless is bound to be less performant. the architecture itself doesn't lend itself to resource reuse. It's a convenience <> perf tradeoff.

100%, since I am crapping these frames out as experiments and fun toys it makes for me to use serverless to prevent the resource exhaustion a lot of frames saw during the mad rush. Neynar is building a tool around their infra so it makes sense to perf optimize. Tradeoffs all the way down.
