Maryam Mirzakhani was an Iranian mathematician who in 2014 became the first woman to win the Fields Medal, the top prize in mathematics. She died of cancer in 2017 at age 40.

Maryam Mirzakhani's interest in mathematics was formed from childhood, and her fluid mind fluctuated somewhere between imagination and mystery. As he himself said somewhere: When I was a child, I wanted to be a writer. Maybe it was my brother who made me interested in mathematics.
