Just to play devil's advocate a little, what good would identifying the best AI agents have? How would it benefit humans?

To the questions, it depends on what you want that AI agent to excel at, top AI trading agent = Profit, top AI for customer services = most issues resolved (in Github for example), just to name a few.

i agree that rating an agent for a specific task (trading, recruiting, etc) is easier and probably more valuable 

another angle is just looking at agents with a social media presence and measuring popularity and influence

Yes, for measuring popularity you can gage social media metrics I.e. followers, likes, recasts.  For influence a wallet where the agent can show holdings in governance tokens or plain financial power to influence conversations. 👍
