I was about to send the link of Jack Conte’s talk at SXSW but I saw it at the end of the article! Nice essay, I totally share your pov. But I think one easier shift to help niche communities is new social media platforms, as we see the rise of emerging ideas. Discord was a very good solution for niche Internet places

But we have so many new social media coming: nospace is already buzzing with 400k people on the waitlist, but also youni or pi.fy. https://www.bustle.com/entertainment/myspace-instagram-tiktok-gen-z-nospace-social-media 
And in the meantime, Snapchat did an ad to say « we are not a social media app » nice move :)
