Do people actually consciously make a judgement about quality of service when they tip??!

I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me.

Yes I have always made a judgment. If the service is good I give at least 18%, usually 20% or more, if it's bad I will give 10% or if it's really bad, no tip.
