How soon before the NPCs in open world games are hooked up to GPT and can converse with you in character based on spoken audio from the player via a headset?

I think about the cicero model and expect sandbox NPCs to "act offscreen" in various best interests to progress an arbitrary # of procedural B plots, in addition to conversing. question is if offscreen can accelerated/succinctly proven on retail hardware.
