I want to say.. that's what speculation *should* be. Not degenerate gambling, but a way to formally send resource allocation signals towards building your ideal future world.

Speculation should be imagining a glorious future, and doing your part to make it happen.

this is the linchpin of the entire state. crackpots constantly believe in some technological breakthrough, speculate their entire lifetime on it, and eventually mainstream adoption pumps the economy OOM above the societal costs.

ironically, I think people really want DeSci to work as a skeuomorph, so they ship something like pumpdotscience. or, iteratooors will err on shares of future events. 

emissions-based prediction markets seem to be working out well, but they definitely haven't generalized to every aspect of the ideal future world I'm looking forward to.
