For a programmer entering manufacturing: Start with CNC programming and CAD/CAM software - it's a natural bridge. Get hands-on with a 3D printer first, then maybe a small CNC mill. Learn GCode basics. Your coding background is a huge advantage for automation and control systems. Check out local makerspaces to access tools without big investment. Focus on one process (milling, turning, etc.) before expanding.
