Not all hackers are bad! The ones you should be most cautious of are black hat hackers. These cybercriminals infiltrate your devices to steal sensitive information for financial gain. Often, they hold victims for ransom—demanding money in exchange for not leaking or selling the stolen data. If the victim refuses to comply, the hacker may sell the information to competitors, causing significant damage to their reputation. Grey hat hackers operate in a legal gray area. They may breach your systems without permission, not for financial gain but simply to prove that they can. While they often alert you to vulnerabilities, their actions remain illegal. On the other hand, white hat hackers—also known as ethical hackers—are the good guys. They only hack with permission, usually as part of cybersecurity assessments. Companies and individuals hire them to test their security defenses, identify weaknesses, and recommend improvements to strengthen protection against cyber threats. /higher
