Not to overthink this at this stage for a “sufficiently decentralized social network” but… When will the Farcaster team revoke their god mode for Farcaster usernames and other features? Also, how about using a Harbinger tax meets user activity hybrid model to mitigate squatting?

No plans soon. Better for the network to have fnames managed for for now. ENS is a decentralized option for usernames. I use it.
