I read somewhere that all this “apparently useless” science is on the contrary very useful for many invisible but tangible things. But I would appreciate to understand when we will find a solution to travel from Asia to Europe all passengers in comfortable seats.

It's definitely true. However progress can take years before landing in the consumers life. There's chances your autonomous car or home robot assistant, or the medical surgeon robot that will save your life, will use patterns refined or discovered during this chopsticks retrieval record.
