true, but i do also think there is a real strain of truth in defense + deterrence narratives. we can't keep our modern pluralistic society without keeping the *large* number of people who fundamentally disagree w that worldview from exporting their structures to "here" (i know you're in the UK) 🤷 and for better or worse we're always one successful attack away from a lot of people changing their stated preferences
