Now an invasive attack on your privacy, but this time in the ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US (NYC): KYC requirement to check your Twitter or Reddit coming to New York under the disguise to protect teens from โ€žaddictive feedsโ€œ - anonymous posts and opposing opinions would become much more difficult in NYCโ€ผ๏ธ It never ends with the invasive attacks on basic privacyโ€ผ๏ธ https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/20/24182396/new-york-governor-social-media-law-parental-consent-algorithms

โ€žAge verificationโ€œ is just another excuse for real name account obligation.

Yes but โ€” this is different from reading every upload โ€” the benefit of preventing companies hacking kids brains is worth the cost

You cannot compare either, two different things. Thatโ€™s such bad take, itโ€™s never about security of children, itโ€™s about controlling opinions and identifying opposition. It enables governments to quickly identify and punish everyone that doesnโ€™t comply with their opinions like we saw it during Covid-19 and everywhere else. Kids are not hacked by those companies but TikTok and Meta. What means hacking btw?! There should be freedom of information anyways and more education over what constitutes good and what bad information.

You can say itโ€™s not about children but: - the public wants this to protect children - policymakers are saying this is to protect children Yes there are consequences for privacy. The question is whether the benefits outweigh the cost And yes the companies getting kids addicted to social media include TT & Meta

The consequences outweigh any benefit, and it could still be circumvented. Would you feel save to share your opinion - that are potentially against governmental policies - if you are fully identifiable? I donโ€™t think so.

I share my anti government views online with my full government name quite happily and my understanding is New Yorkers do too Those who live in a less tolerant country have my sympathy

Very naive view tbh. With all those โ€žhate and disinformation lawsโ€œ getting set up, you could ending in jail more quickly than you believe - even in โ€žtolerant countriesโ€œ.
