These words, inscribed on Octavia Butlerโs grave, carry an eerie weight. In 1993โs Parable of the Sower, she predicted a 2024 Los Angeles ravaged by wildfires, societal collapse & a leader promising to โMake America Great Again.โ
The Eaton Fire narrowly spared her resting place but left massive scars on Altadena, a historic haven for Black families. Octaviaโs Bookshelf, a Black-owned bookstore, is now a vital relief hub. Honor her vision, support recovery.

In 1920, Du Bois wrote The Comet, a sci-fi tale of a Black man surviving an apocalyptic disaster in my home of NYC. For a moment, segregation vanishes.
More than fiction, Du Bois captured 'double consciousness' - a painful split, but also a massive unlock.
Itโs the ability to see the world through multiple lenses. To navigate opposing realities. To straddle past, present, & imagined futures.
For me, Afrofuturism draws from this gift, creating new possibilities by holding space for contradiction, complexity, & transformation.
